Smart Salmon with Hawaiian Huli-Huli® Sauce
For a taste of the Hawaiian Islands, try our Smart Salmon with Hawaii’s own Huli Huli® Sauce.
Made from traditional Japanese shoyu (a soy sauce made from soy beans and wheat), ginger, and brown sugar, Huli Huli® sauce is synonymous with Hawaiian barbeque chicken. Huli means “turn” in the Hawaiian language and describes the method of rotisserie barbequing. According to the legend, when it was time to turn the spit, someone would call out “huli, huli.”
The makers of Huli Huli® sauce have specially reformulated it for us to make it all natural, removing the preservatives and using a lower sodium shoyu. The Huli Huli® sauce with its deep ginger flavor is a perfect marinade for your salmon, enhancing the natural goodness of the fish and infusing it with a sweet and savory burst of flavor.
The main ingredient in Huli Huli®, soy sauce, has a bad reputation in some circles because of its sodium levels. Those with high blood pressure should watch their sodium intake. If you have hypertension and your doctor has placed you on a restricted sodium diet, you might want to consider our other Smart Salmon flavors.
However, some recent research suggests that there might be some health benefits to dark soy sauce. Preliminary studies indicate that it might be many times higher in antioxidants than either red wine or vitamin C.
Antioxidants help to fight the negative effects of free radicals, which are associated with the aging process as well as a host of ailments such as cancer, heart disease, and some degenerative diseases. More research is needed, but for most of us, there may not be any reason to shun soy sauce, and there may even be some health benefits.
