For a taste of the Hawaiian Islands, try our Smart Salmon with Hawaii’s own Huli Huli® Sauce.

Made from traditional Japanese shoyu (a soy sauce made from soy beans and wheat), ginger, and brown sugar,  Huli Huli® sauce is synonymous with Hawaiian barbeque chicken.  Huli means “turn” in the Hawaiian language and describes the method of rotisserie barbequing.   According to the legend, when it was time to turn the spit, someone would call out “huli, huli.”

The makers of Huli Huli® sauce have specially reformulated it for us to make it all natural, removing the preservatives and using a lower sodium shoyu.  The Huli Huli® sauce with its deep ginger flavor is a perfect marinade for your salmon, enhancing the natural goodness of the fish and infusing it with a sweet and savory burst of flavor.

The main ingredient in Huli Huli®, soy sauce, has a bad reputation in some circles because of its sodium levels.  Those with high blood pressure should watch their sodium intake.  If you have hypertension and your doctor has placed you on a restricted sodium diet, you might want to consider our other Smart Salmon flavors.

However, some recent research suggests that there might be some health benefits to dark soy sauce.  Preliminary studies indicate that it might be many times higher in antioxidants than either red wine or vitamin C.

Antioxidants help to fight the negative effects of free radicals, which are associated with the aging process as well as a host of ailments such as cancer, heart disease, and some degenerative diseases.  More research is needed, but for most of us, there may not be any reason to shun soy sauce, and there may even be some health benefits.

For a rich, bold flavor try our new Smart Salmon with Kenyan Coffee Barbeque Sauce.  This dark, rich sauce is all natural, made from tomatoes and a proprietary blend of spices and sweetened with raisin juice.  The sauce has flecks of real Kenyan coffee added for a perfect complement to the sweet and spice.

Our Smart Salmon with Kenyan Coffee BBQ Sauce, like all our Smart Salmon products, has a significant amount of EPA and DHA, the two main Omega 3 essential fatty acids in fish. These two fatty acids are among the most healthy nutrients that you can be eating.

The American Heart Association recommends that you eat two fatty fish meals per week.  This Smart Salmon entrée is a delicious way to meet those nutritional goals.

The main ingredient in the barbeque sauce is tomato concentrate.  Tomatoes are a great source of lycopene.  Lycopene research has found that this antioxidant has numerous health benefits.  These include certain cancer-preventing properties for colorectal, prostate, breast, endometrial, lung, and pancreatic cancers.

Antioxidants also play a role in preventing heart disease.  The amount of lycopene in our Smart Salmon product is small, and the FDA has not set a recommended daily value for lycopene, but antioxidants, like lycopene, and astaxanthin, the antioxidant found in sockeye salmon, help to neutralize “free radicals,” free oxygen molecules that can cause cell damage, aging, and disease, including cancer.
